artist statement:
My husband and I are long time residents of Germantown but I grew up in Oklahoma where I spent a good deal of time in the country playing and working on my Dad’s farm.  I think this is why I have a great appreciation for the vivid sunset colors, the warm golden colors of uncut wheat in summer, the burnt reds and oranges of the soils, and all the colors and textures of nature.  And living in the Mid-South since my college days, has increased my awareness of the beauty in nature, with the gold, red, and chestnut brown colors of fall being some of my favorites as well as the beautiful colors of spring. That’s the reason for the colors and texture that I use in my paintings.
The mediums I use are acrylic and oil.  Acrylic paintings begin with texturing the canvas. Then I’ll mix and layer the paint until I reach the look I had in mind. With oil paintings, I’ll either paint over a textured canvas or use thick paint to achieve texture.
I believe the design of a painting is the skeleton that supports everything else going on in a painting, so I pay careful attention to design. If my design is successful, the harmony of colors, shapes, lines and contrasts pull the painting together.
Finally,  I believe it’s important for me to explore and study painting in order to continue to improve.  No matter what level of skill and understanding of painting I achieve, I will continue to be a student of art.
